Designing for Remembrance: The July 22 Centre in Oslo

The July 22 Centre in Oslo documents the terrorist attacks of July 22, 2011, and their lasting consequences for individuals and Norwegian society. Through historical evidence, personal testimonies and a carefully designed exhibition environment, the centre addresses both the events themselves and the complex questions surrounding their causes, remembrance and aftermath.

The project was developed in collaboration with Rodeo Architects and Halogen, with Void responsible for the exhibition’s artistic, technical and interactive solutions, as well as its physical installations and built elements. A recurring theme throughout the work is time: how it relates to history, how memories change, and how a society continues to live with an event whose significance cannot be confined to a single day.

The exhibition brings visitors into contact with different forms of evidence, from physical traces of the attacks to archival material, personal accounts, multimedia environments and sculptural installations. Rather than treating these elements as decoration, the design uses them to establish a sensory relationship with the history being presented.

Additional contributors: Affix, Bolt Metall, Treverkstedet, Tunge Ting, Fotophono and SMS.
